Topic: Sex Addiction / Hypersexuality – Nymphomania and Satyriasis – Love and Human Sexuality Series

Hypersexuality includes nymphomania and satyriasis, conditions in which there is an extraordinarily high level of sexual activity and sex drive; at the extreme, the person is apparently insatiable and sexuality overshadows all other concerns and interests. When hypersexuality (an excessive, insatiable sex drive) occurs in women, it is called nymphomania; in men, it is called satyriasis (or Don Juanism) (Hyde, 2017).

Hypersexuality leads to compulsive sexual behavior in the sense that the person feels driven to sex, even when there may be very negative consequences. They are never satisfied by the activity, and may not have orgasms, despite all the sexual activity.

Such cases meet the criteria for abnormal behavior (see my lectures on paraphilic disorders). The compulsiveness of the behavior leads it to become extremely inefficient, with the result that it impairs the functioning in other areas of the person’s life (Hyde, 2017).

We will also review the 6 Types of Sex Addiction / Hypersexuality, Possible Causes, and Treatment.
