Terwijl in het afgelopen jaar alle aandacht op corona en de nevenschade daarvan was gericht, is één onderwerp zo goed als buiten het gezichtsveld gevallen: de uitrol van 5G. Elze van Hamelen is onderzoeksjournalist en dook twee jaar geleden in het dossier en is inmiddels een kennispartij op het gebied van 5G. Programmamaker Flavio Pasquino voelt haar aan de tand over het volledige spectrum waar 5G aan raakt, van gezondheid tot militaire toepassingen. Van Hamelen; “Het is niet terecht dat 5G zo weinig aandacht krijgt want het staat niet vast dat het nieuwe telecomnetwerk géén schade zal toebrengen aan onze gezondheid. Omdat er een dekking van 98% zal zijn, kan geen enkele burger aan de gevolgen van het netwerk ontkomen.

Een machtig wapen in handen van een overheid

Verder heeft de uitrol van 5G enorme implicaties voor surveillance en privacy, het is een machtig wapen in handen van een overheid die steeds meer totalitaire trekken vertoont, en uiteindelijk is het technologische infrastructuur die een politiestaat bestendigt.

`Geconstateerd wordt dat de consument niet zo goed weet wat ze met 5G moet. De consument is dan ook geen aanjager van 5G. De telecomproviders vinden met name de toekomstige veiling van de twee hogere frequentiebanden (3,5 en 26 GHz) interessant, aangezien juist deze frequenties vele nieuwe toepassingen mogelijk maken. Het standpunt is dat alles smart te maken is. De grote vraag is vooral ‘welke toepassingen we kunnen verzinnen’. Vooralsnog is 5G ‘een oplossing, waar het probleem nog voor gevonden moet worden’.
