Hey folks! Harmonica lovers and enthusiasts of all ages! Here is a basic lesson for a fantastic song, Wellerman, made especially for Chromatic Harmonica. In case you're wondering, a Chromatic harmonica is the one with the button on the side! If you play a different type of harmonica then click on my playlists, I've got lessons for tremolos, diatonics and even a few other instruments, so don't be perturbed if this lesson isn't right for you!
#Wellerman, also known as "Soon May the Wellerman Come", dates back to the late 19th century when men braved the tyranny of the ocean with fishy beards and sang songs known as shanties. This particular Sea Shanty refers to the Wellermen, supply ships owned by the British Weller brothers who emigrated to New Zealand. (how nice a famous song with a connection to my homeland) In early 2020, versions by British folk music group the Longest Johns and Scottish singer #NathanEvans became viral hits on the social media site TikTok, leading to a "social media craze" around songs popularly considered sea shanties. So let's see if we can get this #tutorial the same viral status hey! If you would like to learn more about this song you can check out this cool article on wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellerman
If you're keen on Sea Shanties then please let me know in the comments below what your favourite #SeaShanties are so I can look them up and have a crack at them! And if you feel like making a sponge bob joke or two then be my guest, it happens all the time.
If you have a harmonica that's in a different key then don't worry, just turn the volume down and follow the scary finger and arrows, and hopefully you should end up with something that sounds like the song I'm trying to teach you here!
When you get sick of my channel, or rather when you want to move onto more comprehensive lessons then please visit learntheharmonica.com for some great tutorials by Liam Ward. He's a pretty neat guy.
It's a Monday night in May as I type this... so far this is only the second tutorial I've made for this particular song, but rest assured me laddies (or ladies) that there are indeed many more yet to come, as I've recorded the narration for the various Tremolos as well as Penny Whistle and recorder.
If you're wondering when my next Kalimba lessons are due to come out the answer is I don't really know! Since I purchased my 17 key Kalimba I have been practicing quite a bit and am looking forward to producing a whole string of lessons for that one, so stay tuned.
Why am I talking about Kalimba? Oh yeah, that's right... I'm trying to write as many words for this description as I can! It's very hard to write a long description for something that is basically really basic and straight forward. You know what I mean? Seriously, my videos are like hey, here's a harmonica, and look this is a big scary drawing of a finger pointing at what holes are what and woah! Look Out! Now there are red and blue arrows flying around. So there's nothing much to describe!
I was using templated descriptions but I've noticed a substantial drop in views lately so I thought I had better experiment. I thought maybe writing longer and more original descriptions would help but man I'm struggling! Oh yeah, sorry about the animated whale... it is probably not my best "animation" to date... but this song is about a captain hunting a whale after all. We needed a darn whale! I couldn't find a decent enough stock photo of a whale so I decided to draw the whale, and what I ended up with looks like a big grey salami with eyes and a tale. But the TABS should make it worth while for you. I wonder who actually reads these things anyway? Seriously if you read this and have gotten this far please leave a comment so I can be wowed by the fact that human beings actually read these descriptions. I mean, seriously what is the point of a description anyway? Don't videos generally speak for themselves? I hope you guys are enjoying my channel and my music lessons. I do enjoy making them, even though my computer can be a real chore sometimes... you can help me get a new one by buying me a coffee... you know it's not an actual coffee.. it's just a polite way to say, hey, I gots to get paid! You know? I suppose I should tell you that I have another channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyvFXjR-sWQrQwf1sFZANew it's not that great, just music that I've recorded over the years and I don't upload to it very much. So you've got this far. Leave me a comment, ask me stuff, make a request but please, public domain songs only! Tell me about stuff and things. But most of all keep practicing and until next time, STAY TUNED!
