Topic: Why Some People Never Marry – Love & Human Sexuality Series

The term never married refers to adults who have never been married. This group includes those who intend to marry someday and those who have divided to remain single (Hyde, 2017).

White (2020) suggests that getting married and having children was the expectation years ago. But over the last two decades, those expectations have shifted, with fewer and fewer folks considering marriage a necessity. A 2017 report from the Pew Research Center found one in seven people who've never been married before don't want to get married ever, and another 27% of people aren't sure how they feel about marriage (White, 2020).

The attitudes of never-married persons about their status vary widely. Some young men and women decide to live both celibate (unmarried) and chaste (abstaining from sexual intercourse). There are two types of celibates, voluntary and involuntary. There are three types of involuntary celibates: Virgins, Singles & Partnered (Hyde, 2017).
Some young people plan to be celibate but not chaste. They find the single lifestyle exciting and enjoy their freedom. Not all singles want to be married. Some singles are single voluntarily and do live “happily ever after” without getting married. (Hyde, 2017).
We will also review the top reasons why people choose not to get married.
