2A 2nd Amendment Second Amendment Gun Rights Constitution Civil War

Why do we have the 2nd Amendment? Is it intended to protect our right to hunt, or our right to defend ourselves? Is it intended to enable us to repel foreign invaders a la "Red Dawn"? And does it truly cover "weapons of war"?
