Flight of (Not So) Fancy - Suitcase Carry on Stairs
This is a very basic (but NOT easy) way to get in a little functional exercise while at work. It is great training for grip and core stabilizers, and even provides a little extra challenge for the legs. Note that this technique could be done with a regular heavy dumbbell or kettlebell, a weight plate or two, a sandbag, or assorted other objects that can be carried in one hand. You can even use an actual suitcase for suitcase carries! In my case, the weights were already on site for use in calibrating scales, so I just borrow them in the times they are not needed.
Individual calibration weights look like the one here: https://www.zoro.com/rice-lake-weighing-systems-calibration-weight-50-lb-painted-12839/i/G4792365
The setup with the ratchet strap holding the weights together may look rather sketchy, but it is a simple solution that works great. Once it gets a little easier to carry the 100 pounds up and down the stairs multiple times per day, I'll progressively-overload by adding a piece of foam pipe insulation to the handle. I've already tried that for a single round trip and found the additional grip challenge to be very tough!
NOTE: try this at your own risk, be careful, and ramp up the weight slowly. A mishap on the stairs with heavy weight could cause serious injury.
