A Trump Remake of the Republican Party?
Liz Cheney is out. Trumpism--with or without the big guy--Is here to stay. This is the biggest reshuffling of the Republican Party in modern history.
Meanwhile, more than 100 Republicans have now threatened to form a new party if the Republican establishment does not break away from former president Donald Trump.
The Republicans involved include a collection of former federal officials, governors, Congressmen and others, but none of them are major leaders in the party. If the split occurs, which seems unlikely at least for now, there could be two new parties on the right, one in support of Trump and one against him.
"When in our democratic republic, forces of conspiracy, division, and despotism arise, it is the patriotic duty of citizens to act collectively in defense of liberty and justice," reads the group's statement, first published in the New York Times.
Though the media reported on the announcement, it seems to have gone mostly unnoticed.
The group's threat comes the same week Republicans voted to oust Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., for her opposition to the former president. Rep. Cheney penned an op-ed for the Washington Post last week blasting the president, which may have been the final straw for her removal.
"Trump is seeking to unravel critical elements of our constitutional structure that make democracy work — confidence in the result of elections and the rule of law," Rep. Cheney wrote. "No other American president has ever done this. The Republican Party is at a turning point, and Republicans must decide whether we are going to choose truth and fidelity to the Constitution. In the immediate wake of the violence of Jan. 6, almost all of us knew the gravity and the cause of what had just happened — we had witnessed it firsthand."
Her disagreements with the former president and his supporters are not new.
"Liz Cheney is only upset because I have been actively getting our great and beautiful Country out of the ridiculous and costly Endless Wars," Trump said in July of last year after a spat over foreign policy. "I am also making our so-called allies pay tens of billions of dollars in delinquent military costs. They must, at least, treat us fairly!!!"
