Cappadocia, a semi-arid region in central Turkey, is known for its unmistakable "fairy chimneys", tall cone-shaped rock formations grouped in the Valley of the Monks, Goreme and elsewhere. Other important sites are the Bronze Age houses carved on the walls of the valley by cave dwellers (cave dwellers) and later used as a refuge by the early Christians. The 100-meter-deep Ihlara Valley is home to several churches carved into the rocks.
