What if the world trade in wild birds was banned? This is what Portuguese scientists defend
In 2005, the import of wild birds into the European Union was banned. This measure contributed to the sharp decline in the legal trade of these species worldwide, but because of that, alternative routes have also emerged.
The European Union's ban on the import of wild birds since 2005 has contributed to reducing world trade in these species by 90%. But, on the other hand, it also promoted the appearance of alternative markets and routes, albeit legal. These are the main conclusions of a team of scientists, composed mainly of Portuguese, who analyzed the consequences of this measure, especially in regions rich in biodiversity that can be affected by the introduction of exotic species. Researchers therefore suggest a global ban on the legal trade in wild birds: “While regional bans may restrict the risk of global invasion [of exotic species], to be fully effective and to avoid new trade routes, bans must be global ”, Reads in an article published this Wednesday in the scientific journal Science Advances.
