Lake Hillier, Australia 🇦🇺 ! Located on Middle Island, an island in the West Australian Recherche archipelago, the lake is approximately 600 metres wide and is surrounded by an edge of white salt and a dense forest of melaleuca and eucalyptus. A narrow strip of land composed of sand dunes covered by vegetation sits between the lake from the ocean. Virtually untouched and quite isolated.

The pink coloration of the waters has not yet been definitively explained. The most accepted hypothesis is that it is rich in some algae and bacteria that live in salt crusts found there. These algae and bacteria would be responsible for the production of carotenoide pigments, thus leaving the place incredibly beautiful. The color of the water is permanent as it does not change even when the water is collected in a container.

It is worth mentioning that in Australia, in addition to Lake Hillier, four other lakes have this coloration. Hutt Lake, for example, has a hillier-like color, thanks to the algae and bacteria that produce this pigmentation. Another lake found in the country is Pink Lake, which has coloration that varies according to the concentration of Dunaliella salina, a salt tolerant seaweed that gives pink color to the place.

Outside Australia, we also find pink lakes. In Senegal 🇸🇳, a lake known as Lake Retba also stands out for being pink. In this lake, the color is also due to the presence of algae adapted to the high salinity of the water that produce pigmentation. Salt, besides providing the emergence of algae, is still used by the local population.
