“In the words of Abraham Lincoln, we devoutly recognize you, Almighty God, as the supreme authority in all the affairs of men and nations.

We are, admittedly, a proud people, and as Lincoln said in his 1863 National Day of Prayer Proclamation, we have been “intoxicated with unbroken success, becoming too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.”
