The Battle @ Redbank, the Siege of Fort Mercer Oct. 22 1777 was a resounding but short lived victory for the young American Army. The Fort would be taken the next month but this day saw two Rhode Island regiments take on a highly professional Hessian foe.
It saw a commander vow victory or death and give his life. It saw 80 recently freed Slaves perform in a manner far beyond the expectation. This would set the stage and lead to the freedom of over 5000 men by wars end. The battle would be the second most loss of life for the British in one day during the war.
