Parrot fishes are generally elongate, usually blunt-headed and deeply raised, and often very brightly colored. They have a distinctive bird-like beak that is formed by the jaw-attached teeth. They use their beaks to scrape the soft part of the coral from algae and coral reefs. This fish grinds its food and pieces of coral with platike teeth around its throat.
