In this video, we’re going to talk about cholesterol, menopause, and aging. In particular, I want to cover why many women experience high cholesterol after menopause.
As you age, your cholesterol level often increases. Typically, men have higher cholesterol than women. However, women going through menopause often experience a significant spike in cholesterol too.
Keep in mind that your body makes most (75-80%) of your cholesterol. Cholesterol is required to make bile, build cell membranes, maintain healthy vitamin D levels, and create hormones.
Why do women going through menopause experience increased cholesterol?
You can think of cholesterol as a bandaid that helps bandage up lesions and inflammatory damage to your arteries.
Estrogen acts as an antioxidant, which helps protect the arteries from damage. Since estrogen decreases when a woman experiences menopause, this also means increased arterial inflammation.
LDL and HDL are proteins that transport cholesterol in and out of the liver. LDL is considered bad cholesterol. LDL transports cholesterol from the liver to your cells. HDL transports cholesterol back to the liver from the cell for recycling. As long as this exchange continues to happen, everything is fine.
If you are getting older or going through menopause, you need to make sure you are eating a clean diet with no carbs/sugar and plenty of antioxidant-rich vegetables. This will help keep cholesterol from causing damage to the arteries.
