Safe and Effective Bone Density Exercises
The following case study will be on Osteogenesis imperfecta, this disease is not highly known about. In the 2000 movie Samuel L. Jackson portrayed comic book store owner Elijah Price. Elijah Price is in a wheelchair and has sent his entire life in and out of wheelchairs due to having this disease. Price becomes obsessed with Bruce Willis' character David Dunn, who survived a train crash without any injuries at all. What draws Elijah Price to David Dunn is that he believes there has to be someone who is the polar opposite of him. The reason for him not breaking any bones isn’t immediately described but it is believed that he is a superhero. The reasoning for this movie summary is to show how this disease operates. Those who suffer from this disease can suffer from chronic broken bones, injuries of muscles and connective tissues and teeth having problems at all stages of life.
The collagen levels inside of bones in people with osteogenesis imperfecta is significantly lower than those who do not suffer from it. The process of bone generating new marrow is impacted by this issue with collagen. Homeostasis creates a process where osteoclasts breaks down new bone and it is replaced during osteoclasts. The collagen issues inhibit osteoblasts from forming new bone as strong as in a normal patient. The patient in this study would suffer 30 plus broken bones in youth. It is commonly believed after puberty the bone becomes stronger and the breaking of bones slows down. It is believed the slowing of growth results in the bone being stronger because it is no longer being thinned as it lengthens. This also helps the patient because without growing the body is stronger in its core musculature. This helps to ensure there are less instances of falls resulting in broken bones.
Osteogenesis imperfecta is passed down by genetics, our subjects grandfather on his mother side would be the introducer. The side of the family had a long history of this disease, the hereditary passing of this disease is common. Now it is also not guaranteed that if a person with the disease mates with someone who does not have it that it will pass on. Case in point the disease has gone from a major level in one patient to not showing in her children. While another family member of the same gene pool can show very light signs and the disease can be more prominent in their children.
Nutritional and Exercise History-
Obviously when we discuss bones supplementing calcium would be the first thing that is thought of. The test subject’s parents would try to put more milk, vitamin d and calcium orange juice into the diet of him. This brought little to no help during the growing stages of his life. No matter how much calcium is placed into the diet, it doesn’t help to stop the disease. Now like any child the subject in his youth didn’t follow proper nutrition, despite the challenges he was facing. Active exercise such as playing sports with friends would frequently result in new broken bones.
