Ancient traditions can give us a roadmap to follow. Sometimes, we all need a helpful guide to lead us on our journey. Especially when faced with a dilemma and you’re not sure which road to take, it’s often helpful to look back at a tradition you respect and ask yourself what that teaching would offer you in the form of guidance. For example, in the movie Seven Years in Tibet, when the villagers were helping to build a theater and they dug into the earth, they uncovered worms. They couldn’t destroy the worms because in Buddhism, they believe those worms might have been their mother(s) in a past life and they couldn’t treat her/them so mindlessly. So they were at a momentary impasse. They wanted to follow the Dalai Lama’s wishes and build the theatre, but they didn’t want to do harm to the worms. What could they do?

Well, they chose to continue excavation carefully while removing each of the worms to a safer location, honoring their lives, and preserving their beliefs. The process took much longer and was definitely the harder option, but it was the only option they could find that would allow them to honor both important needs. More importantly, they knew they had to honor their heart and the beliefs they held dear or they couldn’t continue with such an important endeavor.

How often do you honor your heart? When was the last time you thought deeply about your beliefs and what you hold most dear? Are you honoring those things? Or are you skimming your way through life and not taking the time to listen to the path that will lead you to the greatest peace?
