What Parents Need to Know about Adolescent Marijuana Use in a Growing Legalized Environment

Description

Dr. Riggs’ presentation will focus on current research findings on risks associated with adolescent-onset cannabis use, including neurocognitive deficits, psychosocial outcomes, psychosis, and other mental health problems. The presentation will also review early risk and protective factors, well as evidence-based treatments for cannabis and other substance use disorders in adolescents and young adults. Dr. Riggs will also discuss practical tips to help parents talk about drug and alcohol use with their teens, how to reduce the risks of their teen developing substance abuse, and how to find effective substance treatment.

Learning Objective

After attending the presentation, attendees will be able to
1. Articulate three mental health risks associated with adolescent cannabis use.
2. Understand the increased risks  associated with the use of high-THC potency cannabis products available in legalized markets.
3. Identify at least two evidence-based treatment modalities for adolescents with substance use disorders.

Speaker Bio

Paula Riggs, MD is Professor and Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs, Department of Psychiatry, University of Colorado School of Medicine. As the Director of the Division of Substance Dependence, she conducts and oversees a broad range of NIH-funded addiction research projects conducted by Division research faculty. She also provides administrative oversight for a large number of community-based adult and adolescent addiction treatment programs, collectively known as Addiction Research and Treatment Services (ARTS).  Dr. Riggs is nationally-known for her research and clinical expertise in adolescents with co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders (SUD). She has led the field in conducting the first large scale NIH-funded pharmacotherapy and behavioral intervention trials in such youth. Taken together, this body of research informed the development of Encompass–one of the first truly integrated, evidence-based mental health/substance treatment interventions for adolescents and young adults.
