Join me for a conversation with Springbok #671, former fly-half #Braam van #Straaten. Braam, who is also the former Southern Kings coach, will discuss rugby with us on Chris Wyatt Africa. We will discuss his rugby playing and coaching career, plus discuss the #care4Kings initiative and online auction to raise funds for the now folded Southern Kings rugby franchise.

Sadly for Eastern Cape rugby fans, the Southern Kings folded on 19 Sep 2020, leaving players unpaid. Van Straaten launched the #care4kings initiative (see the Facebook link below) to raise funds through an online auction of Kings memorabilia. Braam has generously donated his own prized Springbok blazer to the cause.

Van Straaten started the #care4kings initiative after the Kings received the news on 19 September, 2020 that they will not be paid. The Kings are insolvent and have not paid players or staff. Van Straaten started to get rugby enthusiasts, previous and current players and the public, involved to support the initiative to financially support the players and staff until they are back on their feet.

An online auction will be held on 16 & 17 October, 2020, where several sports memorabilia will be auctioned off. In a video van Straaten speaks from Glentana beach, as he puts on his blazer.

“As a rugby player, rugby has given me so much. The game has taught me a lot, it has made me who I am. Today, I want to donate my Springbok blazer to the kings cause. Putting this blazer on today feels like yesterday. It brings back so many good memories. I hope this blazer can make a difference in our #care4kings cause.

“This blazer will go on auction on 16 and 17 October. From myself, the coaches, the players, the staff of the Southern Kings, keep well, look after yourself and God bless.”
