Ladybugs are also known as ladybirds and lady beetles. Technically all these commons names are correct, though if you want to be the most accurate then "lady beetle" is your best bet as this common name most accurately describes this insects taxonomic place. Lady beetles are typically dome shaped with bright colors to warn predators of their unpleasant taste. This is also known as 'aposematic coloration'. Lady beetles are often beloved by people as they are used in agriculture to biologically control pests such as aphids. Lady beetles love to eat plant-harming aphids which can be a big win for farmers and gardeners alike. Lady beetles are cosmopolitan and can be found living just about anywhere there is an adequate supply of food.
