On March 3, 2021, after an initial abort due to the prototype's raptor engines exceeding SpaceX's conservative high thrust parameters, SpaceX was able to adjust their thrust limitations and recycle the propellant for another launch attempt later in the day. This time, SpaceX was able to duplicate and exceed it's prior groundbreaking SN8 and SN9 prototype test launches.
The engines and the SN10 prototype performed flawlessly in a flight that lasted 6 minutes and 20 seconds and reached an altitude of 6.2miles (10 km). SN10 executed its entire testing regimen without any problems; from launch to atmospheric flight and descent, to engine re-ignition and a safe successful landing. The test flight followed the same pattern as SpaceX's two prior launches. The only difference this time was that SpaceX chose to re-ignite all three engines in the terminal descent stage of the flight to ensure optimal engine performance and immediate slow down of the falling rocket, prior to gently landing on a single engine.
Unlike their two prior attempts where failed landings resulting in the immediate destruction of the vehicles, SpaceX was able to successfully land their SN10 prototype, proving the concept of full re-usability that has been the driving goal behind SpaceX's innovative rocket designs. Despite a slightly rough touchdown and indications of a fire in the engine compartment, all looked well for SN10 following touchdown. SpaceX's fire extinguishers on the ground had managed to put out the flames after 6 minutes. However, approximately 8 minutes after landing, SN10 exploded. The fireball originated at the base of the spacecraft and traveled upward, completely destroying the prototype. Initial speculation is that a leak in SN10's propellant tank (possibly a methane leak) may have caused the explosion.
Starship is the proposed second-stage of a fully reusable earth to orbit launch system that would significantly reduce the high cost of orbital launches and enable the eventual settlement of Mars.
The Starship is itself only a second stage. It is to be launched above a Starship Heavy Booster. As envisioned, the Heavy Booster will return to earth and land vertically in the manner of current SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets. The second stage Starship however, will be able to reach orbit with sufficient fuel to deorbit and reland using a novel aerobraking mechanism whereby it reorients into a horizontal inclination during atmospheric reentry with the use of its four flaps, raptor engines and cold gas thrusters. Just prior to landing, it reverts to a vertical orientation, reignite its engines at the final moment to decelerate before touching down vertically.
