In this video, Dr. J and Evan Brand talk about zearalenone mycotoxin and how it can affect animals and humans, most especially on the fertility aspect.

When there is ingestion of contaminated food or feed, the GI tract is significantly affected by mycotoxin. Generally, the intestinal barrier in the GI tract functions as a filter against harmful mycotoxins. But, some mycotoxins have been found to exert detrimental effects on the GI tract. For example, mycotoxins can alter normal intestinal functions such as barrier function and nutrient absorption. Some mycotoxins also affect the histomorphology of the intestine. Mycotoxins' impacts include trichothecenes, zearalenone, fumonisins, ochratoxins, and aflatoxin on general and gut health, will be comprehensively reviewed.

One of the mycotoxins is zearalenone. It is classified as a xenoestrogen, an exogenous compound that resembles naturally occurring estrogens with its chemical structure. This characteristic of zearalenone ascertains its ability to bind to estrogen receptors of cell and its bioaccumulation. It then leads to the body's hormonal disorders, which may lead to numerous illnesses of the reproductive system such as ovarian, prostate, breast, or cervical cancers.
