Rough Transcript:
Today’s broadcast is both a news story and an opinion piece. Kamala Harris’ niece Meena Harris deleted a tweet about the Boulder shooting suspect after assuming the shooter was white. Her twitter said, “The Atlanta shooting was not even a week ago. Violent white men are the greatest terrorist threat to our country.” The 36-year-old New York Times best-selling author wrote on Twitter Tuesday. “I deleted a previous tweet about the suspect in the Boulder shooting,” The tweet came after reports revealed the identity of the suspect police had in custody. Police arrested Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, 21, of Arvada, Colorado, and charged him with 10 counts of first-degree murder. On Monday, police in Boulder were called out to King Soopers grocery store for an active shooter. The first police officer that responded to the mass shooting was named Eric Talley. Eric was among the 10 killed. Meena Harris said, “I made an assumption based on his being taken into custody alive and the fact that the majority of mass shootings in the U.S. are carried out by white men.” Following her explanation, executive Producer of “The Megyn Kelly Show” podcast Steve Krakauer tweeted a screenshot of what he said was Meena’s since-deleted post labeling “white men” as the country’s “greatest terrorist threat.” Krakauer said, “The Vice President’s niece is spreading misinformation and inflaming tensions after a tragic shooting. I guess this doesn’t matter, but if it were happening during the last administration, it would be national news.” Let this be a lesson to all of us to wait for information and to be sure of the sources. Many news stations jump to conclusions and report misinformation in order to “be the first to break the story” or to support their narrative. We cannot expect to know all the information quickly, and making definitive statements without enough facts only serves to divide our nation further. Especially when dealing with tragedies such as mass killings, responsibility needs to be placed on the person or persons who committed the killings, not on the weapons used. Guns, cars, knives, ropes, bats, etc are inanimate objects which cannot act upon their own free will. It is also dangerous to generalize and blame entire groups for the act of one person or a few people. So, instead of using our fingers to point at others and play the “blame game”, let us fold them in prayer and lift up the family and friends of all those involved in this tragedy. Let us extend our hands to neighbors, co-workers, and strangers and serve and encourage one another. Let us unite in our resolve to end hate and violence and not perpetuate it. Let’s NOT wait and see but do something…
