But in spite of being so popular, there still are people who are confused or are not clear about what to eat and not to eat while following keto diet. Read on to know the list of foods one should swear by and avoid while on a keto diet.
What is keto diet?
To put it in simple words, keto is low-carb diet. When you eat very less carbs, your body produces ketones in the liver that are used as a source of energy. Keto diet is also known as ketogenic diet, low-carb diet and low-carb high fat diet.
Carbs are restricted in this diet because when you eat carbs, your body produces glucose and insulin. Glucose is converted into energy and used by your body. This produces insulin in the body to process the glucose in your bloodstream. When glucose is used as the source of primary energy, fats are not used and they get stored in our body and increase our weight.
Ketosis is the process that helps our body to survive when our food intake is low. The ketones formed in this process break the fats and use them as energy and thus, help you lose weight.
Keto is about starvation of carbs and not calories.
Foods to eat
Foods that are rich in fats and low in carbs or have no carbs at all are supposed to be taken while on a keto diet. One can eat paneer, cheese, low carb veggies like bottle guard and pumpkin, seafood, chicken, broccoli/cauliflower rice, avocados, egg whites, coconut oil, Greek yoghurt, olive oil, berries, nuts, butter, olives, cream, black coffee and dark chocolate.
Foods not to eat
Foods rich in carbs should be completely avoided. Also, foods and drinks that have sugar should not be consumed. Some of the foods one should completely avoid are potato, banana, soda, juices, pasta, bread, chocolate, rice, candy, donut, beer, vegetable oils, burger, pizza, sugar, factory farmed meat and fish, gluten, oats, corn, buckwheat, all fruits (as they have natural sweeteners), milk and root vegetables.
Verdict
Ketogenic diet, apart from weight loss, can also be used to control blood sugar and achieve other health related goals. But one must consult a doctor before following any weight loss plan or diet regimen.
