The Pentatonic Major Scale Box Pattern for Guitar
The Pentatonic Major scale can be described as having a country-like mood or tone in its overall sound, but it is versatile enough to be heard in various styles of music ranging from Country, to Blues, to Rock. To solo and improvise with Country and Blues riffs, the first step will be to become familiar with playing the Pentatonic Major scale going across the six strings in a box pattern form.

The primary objective early on is to develop finger strength and flexibility. Not only will playing the Pentatonic Major box pattern be a great exercise for the fingers, the same pattern will actually be used in many classic Country, Blues, and Rock guitar riffs and solos.

Associating Moods With Scales
One advantage to learning the Pentatonic Major scale box pattern is that the intended ‘Country’ mood of the scale can clearly be heard. Associating moods with scales develops the ability to learn songs and melodies
‘by ear’. In time, by simply recognizing the mood of a guitar solo as being Country or Blues-based, a guitarist can associate that mood with the Pentatonic Major scale and immediately begin to ‘jam-along’ or improvise with the track without having to rely on any sort of written notation.

Country Blues Riffs
A riff can be described as a sort of ‘musical sentence’, and in order to improvise with Country and Blues Riffs, a musical vocabulary needs to be developed by copying and memorizing collection of standard Pentatonic Major scale riffs. There are many Country and Blues riffs that have been passed on from generation to generation of guitarists, and some of these standard Pentatonic Major scale riffs will be presented in the following sections.

‘The' Pentatonic Major Riff is named so specifically for this lesson, but this Country Blues riff has been around for years and variations of it are heard in many classic songs. 'The' Pentatonic Major riff is played in the Key of ‘G’ Major, using notes from the ‘G’ Pentatonic Major box pattern. This Country Blues riff features both hammering and bending techniques.

Phrasing/Root Notes
After learning a few standard Country Blues riffs, the next step will be to focus on phrasing these riffs. If a Country Blues riff can be compared to a ‘musical sentence’, then phrasing is how ‘punctuation’ can be applied to a guitar solo. Without phrasing, a guitar solo will sound rambling and disorganized in very much the same way as a ‘run on sentence’ does with language. This lesson will focus on the foundation of Country Blues phrasing technique: the root note.

these riffs (‘musical punctuation’), and then combining riffs (‘musical paragraphs’).
