5 TECHNIQUES FOR PLAYING THE PIANO

1. Good Posture

A good pianist plays the piano with their back straight. Feet placed firmly on the floor in front of the pedals. Head up looking forward.

2. A Rounded Hand Shape

Your hands should have a rounded shape like you have a ping-pong ball under them.

3. Firm Fingertips

Good technique is to have your fingertips placed firmly in the middle of the keys. Always keep all of your fingers over the keys, even the ones that you are not using.

4. Elbows In

Another good technique is to have your elbows comfortably at your sides. You do not want your elbows out like chicken wings.

5. Thumb Placement

Your thumb should rest firmly on the side tip of the fingernail.
Keep your thumb out. Do not tuck it under the palm of your hand or keep it below the keys when you are not using it.

Remember these tips and you will be able to move freely over the keys!
