The site of the castle was already used in the 10th century, according to archaeological research. The Romans had already built a solid fortress where the castle ruins now stand. The oldest foundations discovered date from the 12th century when the castle served as a residence for the Von Rulant nobility. In the 13th century there was a ring wall surrounded by a moat. A tower of it still exists in the northwest corner. In the 14th century, the boundary wall was rebuilt and the Bergfried was established.

In 1148 the Lords von Reuland are mentioned in a charter. The castle was sold to the Lords of Blankenheim, who in 1322 sold it to Jan de Blinde, Count of Luxembourg and King of Bohemia.

In 1384, Wenzel von Luxemburg gives the castle as a fief to Edmund van Engelsdorf, who becomes heirloom of the house of Luxembourg, which the lords of Reuland hold to repay the ancien régime.

In 1444 the castle passed into the possession of the lords of Pallandt, who erected semicircular turrets in the middle of the 15th century.

From the second half of the 16th century, the fortification became a royal residence.

In 1666 the last descendant Ottilia van Pallandt-Reuland died and in 1736 the last heir. After that a steward lived in the castle until it was destroyed by French troops in 1794.

In 1830 the fortification was sold for demolition and came into the possession of the Mayeres family in Reuland, who later gave it to the municipality.

In 1923 the Belgian state bought the castle grounds to build an anti-aircraft defense on it. The castle was placed under protection in 1986 and has been gradually restored since 1988.
