After a battle, Indians would mutilate the bodies of their enemies. The Indians would also loot by taking horses, gear, or other useful items. Nothing went to waste. From these objects warriors would make bows and metal-hooked tips for their arrows. Thus, the Sioux was more than willing to adapt to their foes by learning their ways. Something that their white enemies refused to do. Thus, adding more conflict to the situation. However, by utilizing the white man’s tools, the Indians did not have to spend weeks making stone jagged arrows. They could just take the metal from the enemies and devise a much stronger and lethal weapon.3 Furthermore, the Indians learned that cavalry horses could not adapt to living on the Plains; therefore, during the winter months, cavalry horses tended to starve.
