Large numbers of Native Americans are dying from alcoholism, drug abuse, suicide, and violence. Native American teens have the highest suicide rate of any group in the U. S. and are at a much higher risk than other minority populations for heavy binge drinking and alcohol dependence. According to the American Indian Health Council, “crime victimization rates in the American Indian community are significantly higher than in the general U.S. population” and “American Indian women are at high risk of homicide, including domestic violence.”

In telling this family's story, Dying in Indian Country explains how welfare, federal Indian policy, the BIA and corrupt tribal governments are largely responsible for the destruction of families, while non-governmental solutions can bring genuine hope and change.

While this book reveals a first-hand account of the grim reality of family life, politics, and corrupt tribal leadership on in the reservation, the greater story is the spiritual transformation that takes place in the heart of Roland Morris, a full-blooded American Indian. The reader is able to experience the journey of change as it slowly takes place.
