Winter Fat Biking New Trails at Gold Run Nordic Center
Gold Run Nordic Center is one of the best places to ride Winter Fat Bike Trails in Breckenridge Colorado. With Four trails near the club house and more trails above the Nordic Center off of Gold Run Road you are sure to run out of legs before you run out of trails. The Town of Breckenridge grooms seven additional trails off Gold Run Road. Dry Gulch is my favorite, but my GoPro locked up on that video. Then there is Upper Flume to Middle Flume to Tom's Baby. The new additions are Fall Classic to Hard Luck and Slalom to Upper Flume, Middle Flume, and Tom's Baby.
The best route to make the most of these trails together is to follow the Course for the Gold Run Fat Bike Race Number 4 found on Strava. You can Start at the Nordic Center or the Gold Run Road Parking lot. From there, climb Gold Run road to the Historic Preston Town Site and turn left just across the way from the Jumbo Overlook sign. While you are here you may as well go to the Jumbo Overlook as well! Following the Trail left goes to Dry Gulch, an old historic mining community that is used for weddings and other gatherings in the summer. Once beyond the Dry Gulch buildings and on up the hill, prepare yourself for an awesome descent to Gold Run Road after taking in the views. Turn left on Gold Run Road and Climb to the top of Gold Run Road to check out the views of the ten mile range and Breckenridge Ski Resort. Descend back where you came, about 100 feet, and take the Fall Classic trail to your right. Or, your left as you are climbing up the road. The Trail sign lets you know you are in the right place. Ride Fall Classic to Hard luck and back down to the Preston Town Site. Climb the road again and turn right onto Slalom directly across from the Fall Classic Trail. If the conditions are cold enough and the snow firm enough you can really fly. The snow and your tires will tell you how fast you can go without sliding out. During this video the snow was warm which kept the speeds down. If you get pulled down toward the bank of the trail along the fall line on the off cambers, you are going too fast for conditions.
The Slalom trail will take you to a clearing and a few open switchbacks where you will turn onto the Upper flume trail. Upper Flume will take you back in the trees where you will ride until you reach the intersection for the middle flume. Make your first hard left to get into the wider flow trail of middle flume. This year the snow shoe tracks have cleared out the summer trail as well. The Winter Middle Flume Trail is much more fun. Turn right and the intersection to Tom's Baby at the bottom and take it back to the parking lot. PeaBody Placer, otherwise known as Gold Run Road, will take you back to Midas Touch and the Club House if you started from there.
