Activated charcoal is a filtering agent that absorbs poisonous gases; coal miners used it widely to protect themselves from dangerous gases. In the 20th century, to counteract chemical warfare, the U.S. Armed Forces used activated charcoal in gas masks, preventing various occupational hazards from chemical warfare.
