Many, many adults and professionals stop learning after they graduate. The thinking here is, "schools over, learning's over...thank god for that!"

But why do we see things that way? It's like, once we graduate, once school's over and we're into our careers and businesses, we often stop learning. Why?

Likely it's because the school system beat our eagerness to learn out of us. Strict rules, obsolete curriculum, and pointless subjects that have little to no relevance in the real world.

Yet many professionals must continue learning and studying throughout their careers. Lawyers, accountants, and doctors are expected to continue learning and keeping up to date...in fact, often it's required for them to maintain their license.

Yet many other professionals, business owners, and entrepreneurs very often think they can coast through their professional life without learning anything new. In fact, many adults see continued learning as simply unnecessary.

Think of most newbie business owners. What do they know about business? About marketing? About sales? About market research...and a zillion other important topics?

Often, they know very little about business...yet are eager to quit their steady day job, jump off a cliff, and believe they can "make it up" as they go...that they can learn to fly while plunging like While-E-Cyote towards the canyon floor below!

I can't remember where I read this (I'm usually pretty good at citing sources, but somehow this one got lost so forgive me)...

"The average professional worker reads less than one business book a year. Yet they struggle to figure out why their subordinates despise them, why their meetings are unproductive, why their marketing falls flat...

...and why they struggle financially while the company they work for takes the best every worker has to offer. On the other hand, the above-average worker probably reads ten business books a year, and constantly takes courses."

Very often, us adults have this thing called an ego that gets in the way...that convinces us that we don't need to learn anything new...that we already know.

I've had grown adults who I know are struggling financially tell me that they know all about how business works. I knew one guy who said building a multi-million dollar company was a "simple and easy process"...meanwhile, he could barely pay his mortgage!

As adults, one of the most important things we can do is humble ourselves and say, "I don't know how to do that...but I want to learn"...and then hit the books, just like we did in school.

Take classes and courses and keep digging for answers to the things that can help move us closer to the things we want.
