First Look: Retro-Bit Prism HD Adapter for the Nintendo GameCube
In this episode, we give you a first look at the just-announced Retro-Bit Prism Plug & Play HDMI Adapter for the Nintendo GameCube which just arrived for review.
While we don't have shows and conventions going on right now, such as CES which normally kicks off the year, we still have manufacturers working on amazing accessories for modern and retro gamers. The team at Retro-Bit has been hard at work on a new HDMI adapter for the Nintendo GameCube they are calling the Prism. If your GameCube has a Digital Output Port, such as the DOL-001 Models, all you need to do is plug this into your system, connect an HDMI cable, and change how your play your system forever.
The overall design of the Prism Dongle appears to be both simple and robust. The Digital Output Connector features a metal design, which should provide a lifetime's worth of use and resist wear and tear. While the Prism does include its own remote control, if you'd prefer to use your own IR remote there is a pairing and programming button to make it possible to do so. The HDMI Cable exist the back of the Prism, while a USB-C port is on the left hand side for Firmware Updates.
While it may not be the first such adapter to the market, it does promise some interesting and user-friendly features. The Prism is based on the open source GC Video 3.0 firmware, but what's really cool is that there's a USB-C port on the side of the dongle for future firmware updates. Prior to the 3.0 firmware, you really couldn't update your device. Now, not only can you update your dongle, but you can do so without needing to open a shell and JTAG connector. Ok, that got super technical but just know updating firmware will be super-easy via USB-C.
The Prism will come with some great features for the system. Line doubling is on board, and if it is like other GC Video 3.0 options out there, you should have 240P, 288P, 480i, 576i, 480P, and 576P accessible and usable. Scanline options are here for those who are fans of that look (I am not), along with a user-friendly on-screen display.
All-in-all, for $79.99, this appears to be a great addition for the GameCube community. These are currently listed on the Castlemania Games website for pre-order, and it looks like March 2021 is when we can expect these. In talking to Ryan, these should also be compatible with promo codes, so make sure to use RoXolid10 at checkout to save on your Prism! Also, make sure you are subscribed to the channel as we'll be posting a full review once we have one of these in-hand.
