Penal Substitution vs. Governmental Atonement

In this video me and my friend Zach get into some deep theology as we discuss the differences between the penal substitution view of the atonement (which is the view that nearly all Christians believe) and the governmental view. We discuss the reasoning behind each view and both explain why we believe that the governmental view is biblical and penal substitution is not. This is part one of a four part series. Penal Sub was started by a Catholic theologian named Anselm of Canterbury and was popularized by John Calvin and many other Calvinist preachers and theologians as well as Martin Luther. It has also been held to by many Arminians and other Christians of different theological perspectives. To this day it is still the most popular view and nearly all Christians have never even heard any other views of the atonement taught. The Governmental view was first thought of by an Arminian theologian named Hugo Grotius and was held to by some Arminians, Methodists, Wesleyans, and other believers since then but has never been very popular or well known.
