The Whittier Greenway Trail is part of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Southeast Area Bicycle Master Plan and will connect the LA County trail network to Orange County trails when the east extension is completed (MTA, 2006). The Whittier Greenway Trail runs parallel along Lambert Road and Whittier Boulevard, between Mills Avenue on the east end and Pioneer Boulevard on the west end. It is 4.7 miles long, long term plan to extend it east to the border of Orange County (DPW, 2011). The City of Whittier maintains the trail and showcases its natural beauty on both sides. The trail harnesses an urban forest with more than 1,000 trees and abundant of plant and shrub specimens (WC, 2011).

Unfortunately this trail is known for its criminal activity such as beatings and robberies. At some portions of the trail, such as between Penn and Hadley streets, the area is filled with transients and homeless (Day, 2011). It is advised to travel in groups of two or more at all times of the day. A fire was accidentally started next to the trail by members of a homeless encampment inside an abandoned warehouse who tried to keep warm (Sprague, 2018). According to some residents there are motion detectors and undercover officers patrolling key areas. The city plans to install and upgrade new light fixtures at different parts of the trail for safety and better accessibility (Sprague, 2018). Uniformed officers with dual-sport motorcycles patrols the entire length, there are also limited cameras at certain points of the trail (WC, 2011).

The trail cuts through middle class neighborhoods and urban areas by way of bridges. The majority of the trail has a dirt path next to the bike path for walking or running. The trial has slowly becoming a family friendly attraction and another option for exercise that many families and friends can enjoy together.
