NACSW Elite Trial Montrose, CO: Livestock pens
Open air outdoor panel pens, stiff breeze, unknown number of hides. Winnie starts off very interested in the smells coming up from the drain strait in from the start line. There is odor in area moving around the few solid wall surfaces and through the fencing panels. Winnie is drawn to where odor is hidden on the stacked panels on the left, but it drawn off at .22 sec by odor dropping everywhere from an elevated hide on the post in the middle. At .35sec Winnie arches under the post perhaps catching edges of odor falling from the hide. Winnie continues chasing before catching odor from the other side coming through the fencing. She brackets, and drives in (which can't be seen on video) indicating to me we must work our way around. Winnie becomes confused when I take over the search, she is a very independent sniffer, and she may have caught odor from the source hidden in the pipes on the half wall, but recovers herself in spite of my bumbling and sources her 1st hide nicely at 1:40 on the clock. It almost never takes us that long to find a hide. This was a tricky search. At 2:15 Winnie takes a sharp left off the line of travel in spite of my almost too close proximity and begin to source. She knows the odor is there above her, and I know it too but want to wait for her to pin point it. The whirling wind has created many swirling patterns for her, but Winnie is determined and loves a puzzle. I think there is quite a bit of converging as Winnie works the next two hides. I wish I had rewarded her bigger when she sources the hide in the pipe, she worked really hard. Winnie forgave me for not recognizing her efforts and at 2:53 put herself back to work when she caught odor from another source. This dog is driven from within, she really loves to sniff. She works what must be the odor from the new source, goes back to the found hide to rule it out, then works her way to the hide under the little utility wall. I think Winnie knows there is odor elevated on the pole as she makes her way back to that area with purpose. I just get in the way for the rest of the video and even push her off odor when she takes interest in something in the dirt at the base of the pole. I know she was doing some extra curricular sniffing but instead of allowing her to put herself back to work, I interrupt her so she seems to say, "Woman, you been in the way several times now and I've had enough." This is a difficult puzzle to solve and Winnie is only but a wee little Puggle.
