Other things to consider about getting a slow cooker:

It should not be in the locked position while cooking. The purpose of the locking mechanism is to secure the lid and prevent spills during transport.

If holding food in a warm setting for a long time, cut back on the cooking time accordingly to reduce overcooking.

Always cook with the lid on for the recommended time.

Do not remove the lid during the first two hours of cooking unless the recipe calls for lid removal.

The outside does get a bit hot, but if placed in a relatively safe spot, shouldn't be a problem.
