Los Angeles CA | September 21, 2000 | 1305 Hrs

Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) and the United Transportation Union (UTU) had an unsuccessful round of last minute talks in regards to key dispute issues; the use of more part-time employees and contracting off bus lines to private regional bus companies (White & Menendez, 2000).

As a result, the United Transportation Union (UTU) board members and its President James A. Williams authorized a general strike (ABC News, 2000). Other unions such as Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) joined the UTU workers on the picket lines as an act of solidarity (White & Menendez, 2000).

As the MTA strike loomed on thus paralyzing almost all of Los Angeles County since September 16, 2000; for the sixth day Thursday, thousands of bus and train operators, mechanics and maintenance workers marched onto Metro Headquarters adjacent to Union Station for their voices to be heard.

The strike ended 27 days later with a tentative agreement, the MTA board unanimously approved the new agreement, it was ratified by members of UTU later that evening (Whitaker, 2000). By October 19, 2000, the MTA was in full operation once again.

The MTA strike was a prelude to another strike a mere three years later where the ATU would picket for shared healthcare cost (Streeter & Bernstein, 2003). The work stoppage on public transportation would harness dreadful ramifications for many years.

By the end of the decade the MTA board either eliminated or hand over countless of bus routes to local municipal bus agencies in order to concentrate more on Los Angeles rail development (Grinberg, 2006) & (Freemark, 2017). Lines 161 and 460 are last remaining bus routes that travels outside of Los Angeles County (MTA, 2009).

These are scenes of that afternoon.
