TMN: s1e17 Ballona Creek Bike Path - Round Trip

Culver City CA | September 5, 2018 | 11:31 Hrs

After discovering the Ballona Creek Bike path on a map, I immediately thought this bike path would be the nicest in town since it goes through the heart of West Los Angeles. After riding the path from start to finish, I was disappointed by the lack of care and maintenance. The bike path starts at Syd Kronenthal Park near the intersection of National and Jefferson Blvd's in Culver City and ends at Playa Del Rey Beach in Los Angeles. The pavement is broken and at times underwater underneath the Duquesne Ave overpass. The nicest part of the bike path is between Duquesne Ave and Sepulveda Blvd in Culver City.

A local resident called the areas of the bike path between Sepulveda Blvd and the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center in Marina Del Rey "the caution zone". The path is uneven, pavement has lots of pot holes and homeless encampments all around in a few miles stretch of sketchy neighborhoods. Milton Street Park within the caution zone constantly has questionable characters hanging out there such as crack heads, stoners, teens playing loud music, drinking and prostitutes from early evenings to midnight. Riders will get a big whiff of second hand marijuana smell when cruising by the park.

From the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center to Playa Del Rey Beach, the path is in great shape, be watchful for other cyclists, and pedestrians along the way. Mornings to late afternoons are safe for riding or walking your dog. During the evenings ride in groups of 2 or more. Unless you are on an ebike or eScooter, do not ride the bike path after hours or alone.

The Ballona Creek Bike Path is a great to get through West Los Angeles without an automobile. At the entrance of The Ballona Creek Bike path at Syd Kronenthal Park, the La Cienega and Jefferson Metro Expo Line station is just a half mile away on Jefferson Blvd.
