Ancient Rock Drawing Petroglyphs

Between 500 and 7,000 years ago the Hohokam created rock art, which can be seen today in mountain ranges and rocky areas throughout most of central and southern Arizona, especially in the Gila and Salt River valleys. These ancient illustrations are known as "petroglyphs” Petroglyphs are images created by pecking away the outer, darker layer of stone to expose the lighter-colored stone beneath, thereby creating images. Penalties for knowingly disturbing rock art sites include fines and even prison time, Arizona Revised Statute §41-841(a) Arizona Criminal Code–Title 13.
