What is a Retail Investor? | The Truth About the Stock Market

99% of the stock market investors are Retail Investors. A retail investor is defined as an individual who purchases securities (stocks) for his or her own personal account and not an organization. Typically, a Retail Investor trades in smaller amounts of stocks individually, as mutual funds, pensions, endowments, 401Ks and IRAs which is where the greatest risk is found.

SEC rulings prevent anyone, with less than $100k to $500k in household assets, from being able to purchase stocks for s company that will be added to the stock market as an IPO (initial public offering) which is where there is still risk but you're paying pennies on the dollar per stock and have more control and gain.
