mRNA-1273, more commonly known as the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, is a COVID-19 vaccine developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, and Moderna. Moderna's technology is a messenger RNA compound named mRNA-1273, which induces immunity to SARS-CoV-2 by encoding a prefusion stabilized spike protein naturally present on the surface of SARS-CoV-2 particles. It is administered by intramuscular injection. On December 18, 2020, mRNA-1273 was issued an emergency use authorization by the United States Food and Drug Administration.
