Osama bin Laden was unarmed when a team of Navy SEALs shot and killed him with at least one bullet to the head, senior administration officials said on Tuesday.

American forces shot and killed two men and one woman on the first floor of bin Laden's compound in Pakistan before rushing upstairs, where they found the al Qaeda leader in a third-floor room with one of his wives, according to White House spokesman Jay Carney.

The woman rushed at the Americans, who shot her in the leg. The SEALs then shot bin Laden, who was unarmed.

"He was killed in an operation because of the resistance that [the SEALs] met," Carney said, declining to detail the nature of bin Laden's "resistance."

He said resistance does not require a firearm.

When reporters pressed him for more information, he fired back, "There were many other people who were armed in the region, I mean in the compound ... it was a highly volatile firefight. I'll point you to the Department of Defense for more details about it."

Senior administration officials had originally reported that bin Laden may have used his wife as a shield. But Carney corrected the reports, saying that bin Laden's wife rushed at the SEALs on her own accord and that she was shot in the leg, not killed.
