Following Disney's acquisition of LucasFilms in 2016, the Mouse embarked on an ambitious journey to continue the Star Wars franchise with the sequel trilogy. Unfortunately, Disney decided to retcon several ideas and characters within the Star Wars galaxy, putting a sour taste in many fans' mouths. While the films had a stellar cast, the writing proved troublesome, with The Last Jedi facing the most scrutiny for what was perceived as a betrayal of Luke Skywalker, turning the Jedi hero into an isolated grump who tried to kill his nephew. As such The Rise of Skywalker became a confused mess as it tried to recapture the essence of the Force that had been left behind.
