The ragdoll is a breed of cat native to the United States. The name of this large cat comes from an amazing peculiarity: when worn, it becomes as soft as a ragdoll in English.
The breed is native to the United States, more specifically Riverside, California. It was created in 1963 by Ann Baker, a Persian breeder.
Ann Baker leaned a white, medium-haired cat named Josephine with a male of unknown origin named Blackie.
In the United States, the Ragdoll was recognized as early as 19651. In 1969, a couple of breeders, Laura and Denny Dayton, bought four ragdolls from Ann Baker and established a farm under the name "Blossom Time"2. Ann Baker created the International Ragdoll Cat Association (I.R.C.A)3 in 1971. She retains control over Josephine's descendants and imposes many constraints on other ragdoll breeders, so that in 1994, a group of breeders decided to cut bridges with the world of ragdoll and created a new one from this breed, called ragamuffin.
In Europe, the first ragdolls, direct descendants of Josephine, were imported into Great Britain in 19814. They are two English friends, who intrigued by what they hear from the American media, decide to each do a breeding. They each get a couple from the "Fle Blossom Time" cattery. These four cats are instrumental in establishing the breed in Europe.
A British ragdoll Club was founded in 1987 and the breed was recognized by the GCCF in 1991; a year later, the FIFé did the same. Meanwhile, ragdoll was introduced in Germany (1985) and France in 1986 by Noëlle Vialatte "Chatterie de Gailande" in Biarritz. They are a couple from one of the first two farms of English friends: "Patriacra Ragabarfield", a blue colorpoint male, and "Patraca Rag Blossom", a two-tone seal female. The breed was recognized that same year by the ANFF. The first litter was born in France by Madame Vialatte in 1988.
