Blind Watchmen
Isaiah 56:9-12:
All you animals of the field,
come to devour,
all you animals in the forest.
His watchmen are blind.
They are all without knowledge.
They are all mute dogs.
They can’t bark—
dreaming, lying down, loving to slumber.
Yes, the dogs are greedy.
They can never have enough.
They are shepherds who can’t understand.
They have all turned to their own way,
each one to his gain, from every quarter.
“Come,” they say, “I will get wine,
and we will fill ourselves with strong drink;
and tomorrow will be as today,
great beyond measure.”
As I look at politics, I often get discouraged and angry. There are so many blatant injustices that are happening to the poor and to Christians. There are leaders who are not only idle, they are participating in the injustice. I admit that sometimes I forget passages like this. I start to think that God needs to be informed about the injustices that I see.
The fact of the matter is that God is much more upset about poor leadership than I am. This is just one of the passages where God literally mocks the leadership. Here He calls them blind watchmen, mute dogs and sleep loving dreamers. He accuses them of doing things their own way and that they are only in it for themselves. They go on as if things will only get better.
The truth is that things are about to become much, much worse for them. There is no way that you can make God angry like this and get away with it. What I must learn to do is to believe these words and then get out of God's way. We can actually become a problem if we start to take vengeance ourselves. What I have found is that I can barely handle my own sin, let alone the sins of all of these politicians. I need God to help me stay on the path on a moment-by-moment basis. I don't have time or strength to fight those who have wronged me. God is doing a fine job Himself, but there's a very serious issue that I have to deal with.
As I have said before, we are also leaders in our government. If we ignore evil and don't vote or refuse to participate in the leadership that God has called us to perform, are we not acting as blind watchmen? Are we not mute dogs? It's a pretty serious thing to avoid our responsibility to lead. May God forgive us and help us to do what we should be doing to stop evil in this world.
