1948 Zenith Cobramatic Plays Beyond the Blue Horizon

My dad loved Ray Conniff. I didn’t care for his music when I was a kid, but I’ve learned to really appreciate it. This selection—Beyond the Blue Horizon—is from the collaborative album ‘Conniff Meets Butterfield’ with the great jazz hornman Billy Butterfield.

Funny thing about the liner notes on the album: at the bottom, it says “This Columbia High Fidelity recording is scientifically designed to play with the highest quality of reproduction on the phonograph of your choice, new or old. If you are the owner of a new stereophonic system, this record will play with even more brilliant true-to-life fidelity. In short, you can purchase this record with no fear of its becoming obsolete in the future.”

The record plays fine on my monophonic 1948 Zenith CobraMatic, but it’s been obsolete for decades!
