I wrote the solo piano composition titled, “When I Was Just A Boy”, back in 2002.

When I compose, I tend to use a lot of left hand broken chords in my piano compositions, but in this piece I used more block chords and single-note bass lines.

This gave me a lot more room in my right hand to be a little more elaborate with the melody, which gave me the freedom to start off with nonstop 16th notes for a measure and a half.

I wanted the melody to be playful and energetic, like I was when I was a kid. Growing up I remember always being outside, except for when I was practicing the piano.

My parents had to drag me inside at the end of the day, and I remember always being grounded for being late for dinner all the time.

Once, when we were playing stick ball at one of my friends house, I got hit in the head by a flying bat, (not a flying bat creature, but a bat that someone lost their grip on at home plate).

I already knew that I was going to be late for dinner that night, so my friends suggested that I exaggerate the bat to the head story so I wouldn’t get in trouble.

I didn’t get grounded that day, but after dinner, my dad and I spent a few hours in the hospital emergency room to relieve my overprotective mom’s fears that I may have sustained some sort of concussion.

When the main theme kicks in at measure five, I launch into another two measures of nonstop 16th notes, which really do represent the endless amounts of energy I had as a kid.

Another full measure of 16th notes begins the bridge section of the composition, once again reflecting my nonstop approach to life growing up in Turnersville, NJ.

If I wasn’t riding my bike to one of my friend’ house or rushing to get home in time for dinner, I was skateboarding, playing street hockey or hanging out with my friends.

I had a good number of friends throughout elementary and middle school. It was easier then when you were only separated by a few adjacent classrooms. Even that first year of high school I stayed in touch with a lot of the guys I grew up with.

Of course, a few friends moved away and others got involved in sports. By 10th grade we were all in different classes spread out over a fairly large high school. The drifting apart was inevitable, but no one told us that.

But still, “When I Was Just A Boy” reflects my elementary schools day more than anything.

My thoughts of traveling from neighborhood to neighborhood playing other street hockey teams from Bells Lake or Wedgewood bring back a lot of great memories.

I still remember this one game we played in the parking lot of St. John’s church. We had heard that the team we were playing was really good.

I wasn’t really good at scoring goals or even playing defense, but I had no problem throwing myself in front of an orange ball with little regard for my personal safety — so I was the goalie.

We were all Philadelphia Flyers fans and Bernie Parent had lead us to back to back Stanley Cups championships, so he was definitely my hero.

Whenever I made a save my teammates would chant Bernie, Bernie. We won that game 7 to 2, so I felt like their chants were justified that day.

Just one of the many great memories from "When I Was Just A Boy”.
