What Child is This? - Monday's Music Corner with Steve and Shannon Anderson

"What Child is This?" (original hymn) is a song that has been loved by the church and general public alike since the lyrics were first set to music in 1871.

Written by William Chatterton Dix in 1865, the three stanzas actually come from his poem entitled, "The Manger Throne." Dix was afflicted by an unexpected and severe illness that resulted in him being bedridden and suffering from severe depression. His near-death experience brought about a spiritual renewal in him while he was recovering. During this time, he read the Bible comprehensively and was inspired to author hymns like "Alleluia! Sing to Jesus!" and "As With Gladness Men of Old".

And, of course, "What Child is This?"

We pray that you will be encouraged by our rendition of this much-loved song (lyrics below) here in Monday's Music Corner with Steve and Shannon Anderson! :)

LYRICS (as we sang them):

What Child is this, Who, laid to rest
on Mary's lap, is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
while shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

Why lies He in such mean estate
where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear for sinners here,
The silent Word is pleading.

Nails, spear shall pierce Him through,
the cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

(Interlude)

So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh,
Come, peasant, king, to own Him;
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

Raise, raise the song on high,
the virgin sings her lullaby:
Joy, joy for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!
