KILLING TIME Edited Chapter Seven
In the summer Janet's basement, was damp moldy cold. But in the winter, it was damn near arctic, Zeke observed as he crawled out from his sleeping bag. He looked up at the underside of Janet's first floor as her heels rapped across her kitchen floor. He began his usual winter schedule of jumping jacks, his attempt to get his body heat up to operating temperature. Reaching deep down into the sleeping bag he pulled out his two pairs of wool socks, sat down on the surplus army cot and jammed them on his still cold feet. Once fully dressed, complete with his 'Wonder Hoodie', he waited at the bottom of the coal chute, one booted foot on the ladder's lowest rung, and waited for the sound of Janet's car to leave.
