WHEN a man approached Bailey and said: “You kinda look like a sexy cow”, she was left reeling. Bailey, 30, had started developing vitiligo at the age of 19 and struggled with self-image as it spread across her body. But when she saw the model Winnie Harlow, it changed how Bailey saw herself and the condition. Bailey, from Palmdale, California, told Truly: “I remember when I saw her, I was like, totally shifted the way that I viewed my vitiligo because she was gorgeous.” Bailey started to see her vitiligo as ‘cool tattoos’ and describes this shift as her ‘ugly duckling’ moment. She said: “So, it was interesting getting vitiligo and that my vitiligo was what really ended up making me feel like beautiful, like, I transformed to the swan, because of my vitiligo.” To show how she was truly embracing her skin, Bailey started posting more creative selfies across her social media. She said: "I've gotten to this point with my vitiligo where I love it so much that now I would never dream of covering it.” Through putting herself out there, Bailey garnered attention from photographers, launching her modelling career. She has since landed modelling jobs in ad campaigns, including one for Target. Bailey is excited for what the future holds and wants to encourage others who perhaps feel insecure about their own skin condition. She said: “One of the biggest parts of loving yourself is trusting yourself to step out and represent who you are not who society thinks you should be.”
